PROTECTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

THE SEMINAR GRANTED BY THE FUND OF EUROPEAN UNION

The project whose subject is “Protection of Cultural Heritage” was prepared by Governorship of Edirne European Union Coordination Centre and was submitted to Turkey National Agency on 1st April 2005 and was chosen by The Centre for European Union Education and Youth Programmes (National Agency) and was carried out in the framework of EU YOUTH Programme Action 5: Support Activities.

The seminar of “Protection of Cultural Heritage” was carried out by Governorship of Edirne European Union Coordination Centre with the participation of the partners of Italy, Latvia and Bulgaria on 4-8 October, 2005 in the framework of Action 5: Support Activities in EU Youth Programme. The aims of the project can be indicated as in the followings:

· Development of new partnerships and / or YOUTH projects,

· Improvement of the quality of YOUTH projects,

· Development of YOUTH Programme,

· Including the young whose opportunities are limited into YOUTH Programme,

· Development the skills,quality, personality of participants,

· Innovative character of study methods, subjects and target groups,

· Meeting the people who are potential project makers, understanding their skills,

· Creating the atmoshpere which will provide sharing of experiences, knowledge and implementations between the young and trainers

· To provide the support of NGOs and university to improve the quality of youth projects

· To improve of capacity of youth trainers,

· To examine the examples which were carried out at local level and create new plans and to bring European dimension to them

· To create new opportunities for the projects in the future

· To bring different and meaningful dimensions to the volunteer studies of the young.

· To receive support from youth brunches to protect Cultural Heritage

Methods used in the Project:

· The games for the participants to know each other,

· Team games and team studies in order to increase participants' motivation and keep it at high level,

· Presentations,

· Training which were given by qualified trainers,

· Group Work,

· Workshops,

· Case study.

 

The seminar provided the participants to know and introduce mutually their cultures and countries better. A “Culture Tree” was formed in order to improve participants' communication and it was requested from participants who are from different countries and cultures to rewrite English proverbs in their own languages. Meeting games and team games which were used as methods provided to improve the communication between cultures and also create a nice ambience which is derived from clemency. Thus, cooperation environment was created, the young and youth trainers got the chance to express themselves better and correctly. In addition, skills for taking decisions jointly and implementation of them were improved. Besides the clemecy ambience created by the tour programme which has a transboundary fame and is also including our historical and cultural richness improved more.

A daily evaluation form was prepared in order to get participants' ideas one to one and it was requested them to fill this form at the end of the each working day during the project. “General Evaluation Form” was filled on the last day of the seminar. In addition to these, the implementation of “Expectations Tree” was carried out again because we wanted to learn if their expectations pasted on the tree first day came true or not or if they still had the things they didn't want to meet. When the results were compared we learnt that the expectations of the participants about the seminar became true and the negative ideas and prejudices which they had before they came to Turkey changed in positive way.

The results which are indicated in the project of “Protection of Cultural Heritage” are as in the following:

· International legislation can be more effective

· Exchange students to learn more about other cultures and what they do to protect it.

· Prepare international festivals to show our cultures to each other.

· Restore the old monuments or buildings to use for new aims

· Projects should be prepared by the Universities to inform the people and coordinate with other universities

· More advertisement, promotion to show our customs, tradition and culture and also media can help about it.

· Establishment of special institutions to identify heritage and for maintenance of monuments

· Importance of Education

-More effective lessons at school, not only written things in the books

-Adults' education

· Promote volunteers to make projects and take place in the projects

 

The brochure prepared as an output of the project in English and Turkish was sent to Turkish National Commission for UNESCO, Turkish National Agency, European Commission, Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey, Association “Youth for Yambol” Yambol / Bulgaria, “Servizo Volontario Europa” Turin / Italy, “Sociala Lidzatbildia” Riga / Latvia, Embassies and Consulates of related countries in Turkey, Society Volunteers Foundation Istanbul / Turkey, Trakya University and related Civil Society Centres, associations, institutions, related units and local newspapers.
